ENGINEERING PROFESSOR- ALI SHIRANI-Teaching Methods & Style
What To Expect In Class:
In teaching Introduction to Engineering (ENGR-1201), I strive to share my extensive knowledge and over 35 years of industrial and teaching experience with my students. My primary focus is on helping students develop effective communication skills and fostering teamwork during problem-solving activities. Through lab projects, I emphasize how collaboration can make problem-solving more efficient and productive.
My teaching style encourages students to think critically, figure things out independently, and evaluate solutions comprehensively. Additionally, I aim to instill in students an appreciation for the critical role engineering plays in improving people’s lives while also highlighting the potential dangers of neglecting engineering principles and ethics.
Another key goal of this course is to encourage capable students to pursue careers in engineering. To make the subject engaging, I incorporate real-life examples that demonstrate the relevance and excitement of engineering. At the same time, I help students evaluate whether engineering is the right path for them. As we all know, not everyone is suited to be an engineer, and it is better for students to realize this early in their college journey rather than later.
